Contribute to the strategic development of the Human Resource function by developing a progressive, business focused employee and labour relations strategy that meets the current and future needs of Black & McDonald.

Under the guidance of the Human Resources Manager, advise management and employees with a special focus on collective bargaining strategies (where necessary), labour disputes, WSIB claims management, immigration and work visa protocol, as well as other legislative requirements. Track and resolve grievance concerns in the best interest of the organization, our long-term commercial interests, as well as in a cost effective manner.

This position will also require the coordination of Black & McDonald’s early and safe return to work program. Further, monitoring the associated WSIB statements, costs, etc. to ensure appropriate allocation amongst regional units will be expected. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Advise, manage and track grievance / labour issues for all Southern Ontario and Western operations to ensure prompt resolution where possible.
  • Draft professional level correspondence in the conducting of daily duties and work related communications.
  • Monitor grievances for trends and make recommendations with regard to policy in an effort to reduce disputes and increase the overall health of the organization.
  • Develop and foster positive relationships with various trade union partners to ensure positive discussions can take place under adverse circumstances.
  • Under the guidance of the HR Manager, arrange / negotiate special labour arrangements were required to facilitate special project or business needs.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel to facilitate the successful application of temporary work permits, work visas, as required.
  • Advise management with regard to legislative requirements from an employment prospective, as required.
  • Administrate and manage the early and safe return to work program for Southern Ontario operations in an effort to ensure legislative compliance, continually reduce costs, and operational impact.
  • Participate in grievance matters brought before the Ontario Labour Relations Board where appropriate to ensure dispute resolution in a cost effective and timely manner.
  • Fulfil reporting requirements to various provincial government agencies, where necessary
  • From time to time, and in conjunction with the broader HR team, this position may require the coordination of workplace investigations involving employee / labour disputes, complaints of harassment, violence and any other employee / labour relations issue which may arise.
  • Advise and support management in facilitating the corrective action program in accordance with company policy and collective bargaining requirements.
  • Support and assist the Pullman Court Human Resource Manager, and the broader operation, as required.
  • It will be necessary to participate in upgrading courses from time to time to keep abreast of changing policy, technology, and growth to prepare for future responsibilities within Black & McDonald Limited.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-Secondary education in related field is considered an asset.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 2-3 years working in a unionized environment, particularly in a construction setting, and is familiar with general labour relations matters will be considered an asset
  • 2-3 years’ experience coordinating WSIB claims management programs will be considered an asset.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Intermediate experience and proficiency of Microsoft Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required
  • Willing and able to travel as required
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License
