Typically reporting to the Project Manager, the Utility Superintendent is responsible to manage and oversee all field construction among various trades on a project (10M – 30M+) including planning, organizing, directing and controlling various aspects from start to finish according to schedule, specifications and budget. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and provide leadership for health, safety, environment, and quality programs and policies
  • Assist Project Manager or Department Manager in the planning of assigned projects
  • Executes plan and evaluates schedules and site personnel to ensure project objectives are met
  • Provides leadership to Forman(s) and prioritizes work accordingly
  • Oversees site safety and quality control personnel
  • Hire and supervise the activities of subcontractors and subordinate staff
  • Build and maintain customer and supplier/vendor relationships
  • Monitor job costing, reporting, forcasting, and productivity
  • Oversee field administration: timesheets, project reports, and material purchases
  • Review work/contracts/WIP for areas of risk and correct deficiencies
  • Read and interpret reports, such as job cost, labour, projection sheets, and PO entries

  • Trade Qualification and/or have a Technical Diploma or Engineering Degree background to complement 10-12 years field experience.


  • 10-12 years of field experience in utilities construction


  • Advanced supervisory and leadership Skills

  • Ability to read drawings and project/structural design interpretation

  • Utility experience (streetlight & Traffic)
  • Road overhead sign experience
  • Ground disturbance, cable & conduit trenching, excavation & backfilling experience

Proficient user of:

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Willing and able to travel within the Calgary Area.
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License
