ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Black & McDonald Limited is actively seeking a Health & Safety Advisor to evaluate & monitor health & safety hazards & develop control strategies for utility sector job sites. This position will require the successful candidate to inspect construction, industrial, & commercial (as well as various other) workplaces to ensure compliance with company / client policies & procedures as well as government legislation & industry best practice standards.

This position will require a working knowledge of the utility / high voltage field to ensure an adequate understanding of the unique hazards & challenges our employees face. The successful candidate should be familiar with the Utility Work Protection Practices (Isolation & De-energization, Lockout), Electrical Safety Legislation, CSA Z 462 (Electrical Safety, Arc Flash Protection).

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct safety & environmental audits within the utility operation
  • Inspect worksites to ensure that equipment & materials do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or to the general public
  • Develop, implement & evaluate health & safety programs & strategies related to utility/high voltage work
  • Initiate enforcement procedures in conjunction with Project Managers
  • Provide consultation & deliver training programs to employees on issues of health, environmental protection or safety (electrical)
  • Administration/management of loss control program for the utility operation
  • Coordinate/Assist site activity & ensure that the duties, responsibilities, & authority are clearly defined
  • Assist, advise & coach manager(s) & supervisors
  • Review/perform/complete incident & inspection reports & ensure that corrective action & follow-up is taken
  • Review & investigate problems not resolved by site supervisors & contractors
  • Establish inspection & meeting schedules
  • Coordinate the development of safe work practices & job procedures
  • Maintain inventory of safe work practices & job procedures
  • Ensure that appropriate practices & procedures are provided to supervisory staff
  • Conduct random work site inspections to ensure compliance with Company / Client Policy & Legislation
  • Conduct scheduled workplace audits as deemed necessary
  • Conduct surveys & monitoring programs of the natural environment to identify sources of pollution
  • Review the maintenance of safety equipment
  • Conduct internal audits of company loss control program
  • Conduct audits of subcontractor loss control programs
  • Ensure accurate investigation, reporting, & effective cleanup of spills

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Occupational health & safety advisors may eventually be required to become certificated with the Certified Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) , or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
  • 5-10 years’ of experience within the HSE related field
  • NCSO, CUSP, CRSP designations are assets
  • Bachelor's degree or college diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Studies or equivalent
  • Training in Fall Protection/Working at Heights, First-Aid/CPR, Confined Space, Electrical Awareness, Asbestos Awareness are assets
  • Working knowledge of state and federal HSE regulations, programs and standards
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, and other HSE databases
  • Languages: fluently read, write, and speak in English

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working within the utility/high voltage sector. Holding a Certificate of Qualifications as a Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Lineman or Certified Electrical Technologist (High Voltage) is an asset.
  • Familiar with Arc Flash protection guidelines & appropriate NFPA standards
  • Familiar with the Utility Work Protection Practices as well as various lockout/tagout methods for high voltage equipment
  • Ability to recognize hazards as well as advise on appropriate safe work methods
  • Ability to understand electrical drawings/systems
  • Ability to travel 75% within Southern Ontario is required
  • Completion of a Criminal Background Check is required
