Position : Assistant Controller

Location : Stoney Creek, ON

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for supporting the Regional Controller with executing the accounting and financial plan in accordance with Corporate Policy. This position will provide support to the Southwest Ontario (SWO) Region, including joint ventures as well as National Service functions

Duties & Responsibilities Regional Responsibilities:

Complete general ledger journal entries, including Month End and Year End activities

• Review coding on invoices and expense reports for accuracy

• Prepare financial reporting for Operations

• Prepare weekly Service Division Manager report, including Safety & Training Statistics

• Assist with updating annual and quarterly budget and forecast templates

• Oversee tax and government remittances

• Oversee monthly account reconciliations and bank reconciliations

• Assist with general ledger accountability, overhead and recoveries monitoring, expense review and cost control, month end procedures and audit preparedness, including WSIB remittances & audits

• Assist Regional Controller with fleet management and accounts receivables duties

Perform monthly variance analysis (i.e. actual vs. budget)

• Work jointly with administrators & coordinators to ensure work orders and purchase orders are current and processed as per company policies

• Review hourly payroll processed by Payroll Administrator

Process Salary Payroll for Region, including T4 and T2200 Distribution

• Responsible for banking activities, including processing EFT’s and Banking files

• Assist Controller and Division Managers with ad hoc requests

• Support and mentor Administrators

• Other duties as assigned

Joint Venture Responsibilities

• Responsible for month-end accounting procedures including the preparation of the first draft of financial statements for Regional Controller review

• Responsible for overseeing all Financial areas of Joint Venture, including billing, Accounts Payable and accounts receivables duties

• Perform monthly variance analysis (i.e. actual vs. budget)

• Prepare and maintain reconciliation files and working papers to support the annual review engagement by external auditors and US Partners

National Service Operations

Generate National Service & National Account reports monthly & quarterly where required

• Assist with Standardizing month-end Service and Best Practice (BPS) procedures

• Assist National Service Controller with creating Administrative Training Nationally

Education & Skill Requirements

• Completion of an appropriate degree program (Accounting, Finance) from a recognized University and working towards accounting designation

• Preference will be given to those with an Accounting Designation

3-5 years’ experience in a similar role

• Strong analytical skills

• Strong understanding of full cycle accounting

• Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure

• Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills

• Proven interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills

• Strong technical skills in Excel and Word

• Ability to work independently and with minimal direction

• Experience with ERP systems (JD Edwards experience would be an asset)

• Experience in the construction industry would be an asset
